A Study of Serum Zinc Level in Myocardial Infarction.
Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;7(1):4-5.

Systemic studies of trace elements like zinc in relation to cardiovascular diseases like myocardial infarction would provide valuable information for undertaking necessary preventive measures. This study was designed to establish positive correlation between the incidence of myocardial infarction and the deficiency of serum zinc level. A total of GO adults age and sex matched sample consisting of 15 normal control and 45 myocardial ischaemic patients were studied. The serum zinc levels evaluated were 63±4 microgram/dl in the control group while it was 55.2 ± 6.2/dl in patients suffering from myocardial infarction for less than a week. The difference was statistically significant as the P value was less than 0.05. The cardioprotective role of zinc has been highlighted. It is concluded that for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction serum zinc levels are more useful during the 1st week after the onset of infarction. More studies are needed to ascertain whether zinc can act as a potent prophylactic agent for limiting the size of infarct.
