Prevalence of Rubella Seropositivity at successive stages of Pregnancy.

A total number of 100 pregnant women visiting the antenatal clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, JPMC, Karachi were selected at random. Their sera were subjected to quantitative analysis for IgG and IgM rubella antibodies by solid phase enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). These females were further classified according to their stage of gestation. Thirty six were in their first and second trimesters of gestation, out of which 33 (91.6%) cases showed immunity against rubella with 100% immunity in the age group above 35 years. The remaining 64 were in their third trimester, out of which 60 (93.7%) cases revealed rubella IgG antibodies, with 100% immunity above 30 years. The IgM antibodies were seen only in 1 (5.8%) case in the first and second trimester, while 2 cases were positive for IgM antibodies in the third trimester. The overall seropositivity for IgG was observed in 94 (94%) patients and for IgM in 3 (5.3%) cases.
