Experience of Surgical Management of Lower Extremity Varicose Veins.

This is a study carried out in the surgical units of Mayo Hospital, Lahore and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore from March 1994 to February 2001 to evaluate the outcome of surgical management of varicose veins. The study included 53 patients with varicose veins in which 37 patients had incompetence of long saphenous system, 7 patients had short saphenous system incompetence and 9 patients had incompetence of both long and short saphenous systems. Twelve patients had bilateral lower extremity varicosities. Main principles of surgical treatment employed were to ligate the source of venous reflux and to remove the incompetent saphenous trunks and the associated varices. Age incidence of patients varied from 24-61 years. Most of the patients were lost for a regular follow up. Injection Sclerotherapy was employed postoperatively in 8 patients for the treatment of remaining small varices.
