Alpha-Fetoprotein Levels and Size of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;7(1):50-1.

The purpose of the study was to see if progressively increasing size of HCC (assessed on ultrasound examination) had any relation with serum alphafetoprotein levels in patients suffering from hepatocellular carcinoma. Twenty four patients suffering from HCC were included in this study. The largest diameter of the tumor on ultrasound examination was taken for comparison.. Four patients (16.67%) with tumour diameter between 15-6 cm had average alpha-fctoprotein levels of 848 ng/ml. Another four patients (16.67%) with tumour diameter between 8.5-10cm had average alphafetoprotein levels of 1274ng/ml. Eight patients (16.6%) with tumor diameter between 6.1-6.3cm had an average alphafetoprotein level of 520ng/ml Another 4 patients with tumour diameter between 5.8-6.0cm had alpha-fetoprotein levels of 627ng/ml.
