Renal Artery Stenosis with severe Hypertension: A potentially reversible condition.
Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;50(2):117-9.

Renal artery Stenosis (RAS) is an important cause of secondary hypertension, Ischemic Heart Disease, and loss of renal mass. Stenosis of the renal arteries is caused by either atherosclerotic lesions or fibromuscular dysplasia that may lead to progressive renal artery occlusion. The exact incidence of renovascular disease and renovascular hypertension are unknown. The prevalence of renovascular hypertension varies between 0.2% and 32%. The higher percentages occur among tertiary referral centers and highly selected populations. The date on the prevalence of renovascular hypertension are difficult to interpret for several reasons. The only true way to diagnose renovascular hypertension is to correct the renal artery stenosis (surgery, percutaneou transluminal angioplasty, renal artery stent placement) and to demonstrate cure of the hypertension.
