Relative Frequency of Hepatitis B and C Virus Infections in Cases of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in North West Frontier Province, Pakistan.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(4):128-30.

We conducted a study from January, 1995 to December, 1998 on histologically confirmed Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) cases to see relative frequency of Hepatitis `B` virus (HBV) and Hepatitis `C` virus (HCV) infections, as these infections are said to be the most important and common causes of HCC. Fifty-six patients were studied serologically, out of which 38 (67.86%) patients were found to be seroposi- for HCV and 8 (14.28%) patients were seropositive for HBV. The data showed that HCV was the major cause of HCC as compared to HBV (P < 0.005) in both the sexes of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). Males in the fifth decade of their life were predominantly affected. This study also emphasizes the need to take preventive measures against these dreadful infections.
