Morphological and Histological Effects of Selenium on Liver of Albino Rats of JPMC Strain.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(4):143-5.

Morphological and histological effects of selenium, which is an essential trace element possessing both hepatoprotective as well as hepatotoxic properties were studied on the liver of albino rats of JPMC strain. Experimental group was irritable and showed lack of interest in food, along with a marked increase in respiratory rate. On autopsy their livers were found enlarged and pale. On light microscopy the architecture of hepatic lobule was found disturbed and signs of fatty infiltration were observed in various experimental subgroups with varying degree of severity. These changes were more marked in animals sacrificed 2 days after the introduction of drug. It was concluded that single intraperitoneal dose of sodium selenite produced hepatotoxic effect morphologically and histologically in adult albino rats of JPMC strain of subgroup sacrificed after 2 days of drug administration.
