Effect of Female Literacy on the Family Size in a Rural Community.
Pak J Health Jan ;35(3-4):86-8.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted to see the relationship of female literacy on the family size in a rural community of district Khushab. All the married women within the last five years of village Chak no 47 M. B., 7 k.m. from Khushab, were included in the study; they comprised 70 women. The effect of education of the females on the present number of children and the number of children wanted was studied. Illiterate had on the average a 2.39 children and they wanted to have on the average 4.37 children, mothers with under-matric education had on the average 2.47 children while they wanted to have a mean of 3.28 children. The mean number of children of the mothers with matric and above education was 2.08 while they wanted to have a mean 4.16 children. These figures show generally an inverse relationship between the number of children (both at present and desired) and the education level of the females. There was no significant difference between the number of children of mothers of different education groups but there was a significant difference between the number of children desired by the mothers of the different education groups. Thus there was a negative correlation between the family size with the female education.
