Pak J Health Jan ;35(3-4):106-9.

Hospital waste, if not properly managed poses massive risk to the health of the hospital workers and public at large. A cross sectional survey was conducted in which the quantitative and qualitative aspects of hospital waste management at the Allied Hospital Faisalabad were studied. According to the survey, maximum infectious waste was generated in the operation theatre and gynecology ward while minimum waste was produced in the OPD and ophthalmology ward. It was revealed in the study that hospital staff neither had knowledge regarding infectious hospital waste management nor were trained / properly equipped in the management of such specific waste. The infectious waste was not being segregated at the source and it was also observed that the infectious waste was burnt frequently with other wastes at the central hospital waste disposal facility. The incinerator of the hospital was not in working condition. As infectious hospital waste management is an important concern, therefore it is the utmost need to take corrective and appropriate measures at the earliest to abrogate these prevailing states of affairs.
