Should Antibiotics be Mandatory in Perioperative Tonsillectomy and/or Adenotonsillectomy?.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(6):207-208.

This study was undertaken during the period from August, 1998 to May, 1999 at Queen Alia Military Hospital, Amman, Jordan, to determine whether the administration of perioperative prophylactic antibiotics in tonsillectomy and/or adenotonsillectomy can reduce the morbidity from, and increase the safe;, ty of this operation. A total of 80 children aged 3 to 15 years undergoing tonsillectomy and adenotonsillec- for either chronic tonsillitis or adenotonsillar hypertrophy (Obstructive sleep apnea and / or upper airway obstruction) were included. Out of which 41 children received antibiotic (penicillin) before undergoing a dissection tonsillectomy and/or adenotonsillectomy while 39 did not receive antibiotic. It was found that only 1(2.5%) patient from the group receiving antibiotic developed post-operative complications as compared with the non-antibiotic group in which 6(15%) patients developed complications. The difference was statistically significant which led us to conclude that perioperative antibiotic treatment is safe and decreases morbidity.
