J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(6):217-19.

Four hundred and ten patients were included in a prospective study, conducted from January 1995 to December, 1998 at Peshawar in the medical wards of Khyber Teaching Hospital, Al-Khidmat Hospital and Hayatabad Medical Complex, to find out the relative frequency of HBV and HCV infections in patients of cirrhosis of the liver in NWFP. Anti-HCV was found positive in 42.68% patients, HBsAg was positive in 25.60% patients and both were positive in 7.32% patients whereas both the viruses were negative in 24.40% patients. We concluded that HCV is a leading cause of cirrhosis in NWFP, followed by HBV. Both the viruses account for about three-fourth of the total cirrhotics.
