Frequency of acute complications in pyogenic meningitis in children.

To describe the frequency of immediate (Acute) complications of pyogenic meningitis in children. Study Design: Hospital based prospective sectional study. Setting: Pediatric department, Jinnah Hospital Lahore. Duration of Study: From 10th march 2006 to 10th march 2007. Sample Size: 100 patients of bacterial meningitis Method: 100 patients selected by non-probability sampling with bacterial meningitis of age ranging from 1 month to 12 years were followed for immediate complications. Daily monitoring of vital signs, complete blood count, serum electrolyte, fundoscopy of all patients and computed tomography scan in selected cases was done. Results: Out of 100 patients, 62% were male and 38% females and majority of children (47%) were under three years. Fever was present in all patients. Acute complications of bacterial meningitis were seen in 57% of patients. Fits were the most common complication (46%) followed by raised intracranial pressure (33%) and cranial nerve palsies (12%). Other complications were syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (7%), subdural effusion (04%), hydrocephalus (7%) and hemiparesis in 1% of patients. Fits were more common in younger patients while raised intracranial pressure and cranial nerve palsies were more common in older patients. Conclusions: Bacterial meningitis remains a serious disease. Immediate complications were observed in 57% of patients, and majority children were under three years of age.
