Efficacy of Octreotide in Cases of Inoperable Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Clinical Trial.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(7):258-60.

A study was conducted to assess the clinical efficacy of high-dose octreotide in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. Thirteen patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma were randomised to receive either 250ug subcutaneous octreotide twice daily (6 patients) or no treatment (7 patients). Both groups were comparable with respect to baseline characteristics. The study showed significant improvement in the quality of life amongst the treatment group as compared to the control group (P< 0.05). The liver enzymes and serum alpha feto proteins (AFP) concentrations were improved significantly in the treatment group as compared to the control group. No serious side effects were found in the treatment group. We conclude that high-dose octreotide significantly improves quality of life that may improve survival; and is a valuable alternative in the treatment of inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma.
