J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(10):380-383.

A study on 600 cases of chronic liver disease (CLD) admitted in Holy Family Hospital, District Headquarter, Rawalpindi and consultant`s private clinics from January, 1996 to December, 1998 was carried out and certain clinical, serological and biochemical parameters were specifically analysed to determine the spectrum of CLD due to Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Major group was of males (57%) of which (63%) were end stage cirrhotics with the mean age of 54 years and 37% were chronic hepatitis cases with the mean age of 46 years. Most cirrhotics presented with complications like ascites (68%) and upper GI bleeding (26%) while the cases of chronic hepatitis were mostly asymptomatic (25%) or had vague symptoms. We concluded that most of the patients of HCV infection had advance liver disease and presented with complication due to portal hypertension.
