J Pak Orthop Assoc Jan ;20(2):118-24.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment of stiff elbows with triceps’ interpositional arthroplasty. Study Design: Quasi experimental prospective study. Place and Duration: From July 1999- August 2004. Department of Orthopaedic Unit 1, Civil Hospital and Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi. Patients & Methods: Fifty six adult patients who developed stiffness of elbow after trauma or burn were included in this study. Modified Campbell’s technique was employed with the exploration of elbow, clearing of any fibrous tissue and a tongue of triceps’ muscle was developed and inter-posed between humerus and ulna. Stitches were removed after 15 days followed by aggressive physiotherapy. Results: Out of 56 patients, 38 were males and 18 females. The mean age of patients was 26.3years. Among 56 patients, 12 had fixed their elbows from 0-10 degrees, 14 at 10-20 degrees, 12 at 10-30 degrees and 8 patients had their range of movement from 15-40 degrees. All 56 patients in this study were satisfied by their surgical treatment as their range of flexion / extension movements markedly improved along with daily routine work. Conclusion: Triceps’ interpositional arthroplasty is a safe, cost effective and a useful procedure for damaged stiff elbows in our set-up.
