Lock hospitals and the british army in India.
J Allama Iqbal Med Coll Jan ;6(4):1-10.

The 19th century reports by the Sanitary Commissioner, Administration and specific reports on the health of the British Army in India there are many references to lock-hospitals and venereal diseases (VD) among the troops. These intriguing places created to manage and control venereal diseases among the European Army in India are forgotten part of medical history of British Raj. Each major cantonment housing European troops had a lock-hospital outside the cantonment limits, usually the Saddar Bazaar, where the local prostitutes were inspected with a vaginal speculum on fortnightly basis and if suspected of suffering from ‘venereal disease’ were “locked” at the hospital (Review article).
