Hepato renal syndrome (HRS) is a functional renal failure in patients with advanced cirrhosis and refractory ascites, which results due to the circulatory dysfunction, caused by splanchnic arterial vasodilation, renal vasoconstriction and reduced cardiac output. There are two types of HRS. Type 2 HRS is a slowly progressive renal failure in patients with cirrhosis and refractory ascites. Type 1 HRS is a rapidly progressive renal failure due to a precipitating event. Type 1 HRS is rapidly fatal if not treated. Effective treatment includes using vasoconstrictors with intravenous albumin, TIPS and liver transplantation. (Review article).
