Glycemic control, diabetic complications and their awareness.

Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the glycemic control and the frequency of various diabetic complications in hospitalized patients and their awareness about them. Material and Methods: This was a cross sectional observational study conducted in Medical C unit of Khyber Teaching Hospital involving two hundred diabetic patients admitted between Jan 2006 to June 2006. Patients were monitored regarding their control of diabetes and examined for both micro and macro vascular complications and were also interviewed about their awareness and education regarding diabetes and its complications. Results: Overall glycemic control was very poor with 81% patients having an HbA1c of more than 7%.Retinopathy was present in 31%, neuropathy in 36% and nephropathy in 24%. Hypertension was the most common co-morbid condition present in 55%. Nine percent had Ischemic heart disease and a similar 9% had cerebrovascular events. Thirty-one percent had diabetic foot problems, while only 38% patients had any awareness or education about diabetes and its complications. Conclusion: Our study not only showed poor glycemic control in our patients but also a high frequency of complications with poor awareness.
