Analysis of Acute Gastroenteritis Cases Presenting in Holy Family Hospital Emergency Department in Post Flood Period of 2001.

Eighty six cases of gastroenteritis admitted through Emergency Department of Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi were analyzed. Male to female ratio was 5:3 and mean age was 43 years. Most of the cases came from Khayaban-e-Sir Sayyed (50%) and Murree Road (30%). The source of their infection was contaminated water (67%). Most of the cases were having mild to moderate dehydration (96%) and were clinically stable. Two protocols of treatment were equally effective in controlling the disease but the cost of protocol using doxycycline was 50% less than the ciprofloxacin protocol. Vibrio cholerae was isolated in only eleven cases (12%).
