Reference Range of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Levels in Apparently Healthy Adults.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;5(1):28-30.

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G-6PD) is one of the important cytoplasmic enzymes involved in glucose metabolism in the erythrocytes. The enzyme deficient red cells are unable to withstand oxidative stress and undergo hemolysis. The present study was designed to have values of G-6PD in adult males (n=30) and adult females (n=28) for laboratory reference range in Rawalpindi-Islamabad region. The commercially available kits (Randox) were used. The values obtained in apparently healthy individuals (age range = 22-41 years) ranged from 6.3-15.4 U/G Hb in males (mean = 10.2 ± 1.9 U/G Hb) and in females, the value range was 6.7-16.2 U/G Hb with a mean value of 11.4 ± 2.1 U/G Hb. The levels are found useful in the laboratory work as a reference. It was also found that G-61`13 levels show a fall with the advancement of age when compared with the other studies.
