Treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: Recent Advances.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;5(1):41-5.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is one of common hematological malignancies. In 95% cases it is associated with Philadelphia chromosome. Treatment of CML has changed a lot from conventional medications like hydroxyurea and busulphan. Alpha interferon, bone marrow transplantation (BMT), and now glivec are prominent treatment options. Interferons are indicated for chronic phase of the disease and lead to significant prolongation of median survival. BMT is curative treatment, its modifications like autologous marrow / stem cell transplantation have definite role in advanced disease. Glivec (BCR-ABL kinase inhibitor) is a newer drug, which has shown promising results and may replace interferon and BMT in future. SCH 66336 belonging to Farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTI) group may revolutionize CML therapy in future. Decitabine, homoharringtonine, ocfosfate, and PEG-interferons are also being tried with variable success.
