Current weaning practices in our setup.

Objective: To assess the reasons for early and delayed weaning among children presenting in out patient department of Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi. Study and Duration of study: The Department of Pediatrics, Fauji Foundation hospital Rawalpindi, from 1st June, 2007 to 30th November, 2007. Materials and Methods: Sample size was 500 patients and technique was non-probability convenient sampling. Objectives were assessed with Performa and data was analyzed with SPSS 10.0 Results: Children were less than 2 years of age, out of which 52.8 % were male and 47.2 % were female. The median age at which parents reported first giving semisolid diet was 15 weeks.22% children received semisolid diet before 3 months, 41% received between 4-6 months, 25% between 6-8 months and 12% received after age of 8 months. The commonest first food offered was baby rice given by 76% of mothers. reasons for early weaning, 46% children ate family food well, and among reasons for delayed weaning, poverty / food shortage was most significant factor ( in 35 % of cases). Conclusions: It was concluded that weaning practices were not adequate due to a number of reasons, including poverty, food shortages, and maternal perception of child needs, family practices and pressures.
