Pak Paed J Jan ;34(3):144-7.

Objective: To review the mode of presentation of posterior urethral valves in neonates in our population. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Hospital based study. Materials and Methods: One hundred and eighty seven newborn boys with posterior urethral valves admitted at The Children’s Hospital, Lahore, during period January 2007 to December 2009 were included in this study. Results: Abnormal voiding pattern and abdominal distension were the most common presenting symptoms and sign, followed by urosepsis. Abnormal antenatal ultrasound findings were detected in 28 % of patients. Micturating cystourethrogram was diagnostic in 94% of patients. Conclusion: Posterior urethral valves should be suspected whenever clinical presentation is suggestive. Early referral to a regional centre is recommended for institution of timely management and better potential of restoration of renal functions.
