J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;7(2):43-6.

This study conducted on 429 patients of liver diseases from in and around Rawalpindi and Islamabad regions (Northern Pakistan) revealed 100 cases of chronic liver disease (CLD). It was observed that cirrhosis was the most common CLD accounting for 58% cases followed by hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in 22% and chronic hepatitis (CH) in 20% cases. The CLD cases were detected in all age groups, and in both the sexes. However, majority of the cases of CLD (57%) were seen in the 5th and 6th decades of life, with a male to female ratio of about 2:1. The HBV serological profile revealed HBsAg seropositivity in 37% cases of CLD, including 35% cases of CH, 24.13% cirrhotics and 72.73% patients with HCC. The circulating antiHBc was detectable in the sera of 60% cases of CH, 46.55% of cirrhotics and 86.36% patients with HCC. The anti-HBc seropositivity was appreciably high (91.89%) in HBsAg-positive CLD cases whereas in HBsAg-negative patients, it was demonstrable in only 38.09% of cases.
