Prevalence of iron deficiency with and without anemia.

Background: To determine the prevalence of iron deficiency in the male inhabitants of a residential institution. Methods: Blood samples of 180 residents of an orphanage, in district Attock, were collected. Complete blood counts and serum ferritin assays were performed Results: Prevalence of anaemia (Hb<13.0g/dl) and iron deficiency (ferritin< 20 ng/ml) was 60.55% and 80.55%, respectively. Normal haemoglobin with low ferritin was seen in 36.11% cases and low haemoglobin with low ferritin was seen in 44.44% cases. Conclusion: Despite the well – recognized pathology the prevalence of iron deficiency remains enormous.
