J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;13(2):70-2.

Background: To assess the efficacy of Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) in different types of cataracts in patients with low socioeconomic background. Methods : In this interventional study , 64 eyes of 52 patients were used. All the patients had different types and maturity of cataracts who underwent MS1CS.After making a frown shaped sclerocorneal tunnel wound superiorly above the limbus, the nucleus was delivered after hydrodissection, with the help of a wire vectis after doing a straight capsulotomy from 10 o’clock position to 2 o’clock position. The patients were examined on first ,7th ,28th postoperative days and then at 6 weeks. Postoperative findings including postoperative astigmatism and best corrected visual acuity were used as measures of efficacy of MSICS. Results: All types of cataract were included in this study. During and after the surgery, there were very few complications. After six weeks postoperatively, the Mean astigmatism was 1.25 D with a range from 0.25 D to 2.25 D ( Standard Deviation of 0.47D).The best corrected visual acuity at six weeks was 6/9 or better in 78% of eyes. Conclusions: When there is non availability of sophisticated Phaco equipment or when the patients are not affording, Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery is a good surgical alternative to phacoemulsification.
