Infected femoral pseudoaneurysms "the optimum management".

Background: To devise an optimum treatment strategy in cases presenting with femoral pseudoaneurysms . Method: This retrospective analytical study was carried out at Surgical Unit I of Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi from 2002 to 2007. All 13 patients presenting with femoral pseudoaneurysms in this period were included in this study. Nine patients underwent ligation of femoral artery and four patients had an extra anatomical bypass. Results: The 13 patients who presented to the hospital, were all males .The average age of presentation was 45.5 years. Twelve out of the thirteen patients were IV drug abusers.. Postoperatively, there was no hemorrhage or amputation. After bypass three patients developed graft infection and one patient had thrombosis of graft. Four patients in the ligation group had complaints of mild claudication, which settled over time. One patient expired . Conclusion: Ligation with strict postoperative observation is a safe, easy and cost-effective method for treating patients with femoral pseduo aneurysms.
