The Expanded programme on Immunization (EPI) was established by the World Health Organization in 1974 to ensure universal access to routine immunizations in children. Six diseases were targeted at: Tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and measles. According to national surveys, only less than 5% of the infants around the world were fully immunized.1 By 2005, 79% of the children around the globe were immunized with at least three doses of DTP. The children of the developing countries were still behind. With the GVIS (Global Immunization Vision and Coverage), aiming to provide 90% coverage with DTP3 and to keep these high levels by over 90% for the years to come, was visualized.2 With all the focused efforts, by the end of 2010, 67% of the WHO member states had achieved 90% coverage of DTP3. A large number of children were still either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated with the available effective vaccines.
