The helicobacter pylori infection in diabetic children.
Pak Paed J Jan ;36(2):100-3.

Introduction: There are reports that there is high prevalence of H pylori infection in patients and diabetes mellitus. Objective: To evaluate helicobacter pylori infection in cases of diabetes mellitus. Patients and methods: This case control study was carried out in Mofid Children’s Hospital and Loghman Hospital Tehran (Iran) during 2008-2009. The cases of diabetes mellitus (with two repeated fasting blood sugar>126mg/dl, blood sugar >200 mg/dl, or clinical manifestation of diabetes) regardless of duration of disease with no history of antibiotic therapy in past 2 months were included in this study. Urea breath test (UBT) was done with ISOMAX 2000 made by Canada. Forty-nine cases (M: 28, F: 21) underwent urea breath test to detect H. pylori infection. 108 healthy controls were also selected. Urea breath test was also performed in all controls children. Chi-square test was used for analysis with SPSS version 11.5. Results: Forty-nine cases with mean age 8.1±2.6 (range 3.5-15 years) were studied. From case group, 14(28.6%) cases had positive UBT test while among 108 control persons, 30 (27.8%) had UBT positive results (P value>0.05). Conclusion: Diabetic children are not at high risk of H pylori infection but study with large sample size is needed.
