Mother & Child Jan ;37(1):19-24.

A study was conducted in children with Acute Otitis Media (AOM) at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore to choose an antibiotic of first choice for treatment of AOM. The treatment was started with a second-generation cephalosporin covered most of the common pathogens involved in the infection. To assess the efficacy and safety of the drug, seventy patients with Acute Otitis Media were selected and treated. The dose employed was 20 - 40 mglkg a day in three divided doses. With 7 days treatment, it resulted in reduction of symptoms especially pain and hypoacusis.Tympanometry showed a high incidence of normalization and a good percentage of patients had improvement on Pure Tone Audiogram (PTA). Low incidence of side effects was reported. Second generation cephalosporins are still one of the best antibiotics for treatment of AOM in children.
