Biomedica Jan ;13(2):60-4.

The objective of the study was to find out the prevalence of various intestinal parasites in the Northern areas of Pakistan. A total of 300 cases were studied, out of these 224 (74.6%) were found positive. Prevalence of intestinal helminths (55.33%) was greater than protozoa (19.33%). Females (80%) were more commonly infected than males (58%) and the highest infestation of both parasites was seen in children (86%). The most commonly encountered pathogenic protozoa was Entamoeba histolytica (8%) whereas Giardia lamblia (333%) was much less prevalent. Among soil transmitted intestinal nematodes the commonest infestation was of Ascaris lumbricoides (35%) followed by Trichuris Trichiura (93.3%) and among Cestodes, Hymenolepis nana (83.3%) was most prevalent.
