A comparative analysis of Infrared Coagulation and Injection Sclerotherapy as non operative treatment for the management of Hemorrhoids.
Biomedica Jan ;13(2):70-2.

In this study 255 patients suffering from first and second degree haemorrhoids were divided into two groups. Group A comprising of 130 cases was treated by injection sclerotherapy and group R comprising of 125 cases was treated by infrared coagulation (IRC). The results of each group were analyzed and compared, 68% of cases treated with IRC were cured compared to 63.1% treated with injection sclerotherapy. On the other hand 9.2% of cases improved by injection sclerotherapy compared to 8% by IRC. In these groups 27.7% treated by injection sclerotherapy did not improve compared to 24% treated by IRC. It was concluded that IRC is comparatively superior in controlling bleeding in first degree haemorrhoids (80%) compared to injection sclerotherapy (65.7%). On the other hand injection sclerotherapy is slightly better for second degree haemorrhoids (60%) compared to IRC (58.8%). IRC is less painful and more acceptable to the patients and hence an optimal non operative treatment for internal haemorrhoids.
