Tretinoin Cream versus Benzoyl Peroxide(10%) gel in the tropical treatment of mild Acne Vulgaris.

To compare the efficacy of commonly used topical preparation for Acne (Benzoyl Peroxide and Tretinoin), 30 patients with mild acne vulgaris were randomly picked from Dermatology out patients at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (a teaching institution) at Lahore. By dividing the patients in two equal groups, Group A was given 0. 05% Tretinion cream and Group B 10% Benzoyl Peroxide gel both for topical use every night. Patients having had any topical therapy for 2 weeks and systemic therapy for period of 4 weeks, prior to this study as well as with any other systemic ailments were excluded from the study. All the patients were assessed at the start for the number of comedones, papules and pustules (0 - 3 scale) and were followed up every fortnight, for a period of 6 weeks only. 23 patients completed the study (12 in Group A and 11 in Group B). Mean scores on each visit and a global assessment of 4.6 at week 0 reduced to 23 at week 6, while in Group B it reduced from 4 to 1.8. The improvements in both groups were about the same but no statical difference was found between the two group. Side effects of burning, peeling and dryness were similar in both groups on the first visit and improved subsequently; while Hyperpigmentation was only seen in Group B in 3 out of 11 (27%) patients.
