An experience of mesh repair in inguinal hernia with two and half years follow up at Civil Hospital, Karachi.

Objectives: To evaluate the effi cacy of mesh repair in inguinal hernia. Design: Prospective study. Sett ing and Duration: Th is study was conducted in the Department of Surgery, Civil Hospital and Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi from April 2008 to April 2010. Methodology: A total of 112 patients underwent Mesh repair of 116 inguinal hernia, as 04 patients had bilateral hernias. Inclusion Criteria: Patient with clinical presentation of inguinal Hernia either primary or recurrent in nature. Exclusion Criteria: Patient with other types of groin and extra- groin hernia. Patient, too feeble to withstand surgery. Results: A total of 112 patients were operated and included in this study. Th e follow-up time was 05 to 07 years, follow-up rate was 75.0 %.83.03 % ( n:93) belongs to Urban area and 16.97% (n=19) from the remote areas. Th e age of the patients ranges from 21 to 70 years. All were male. With major percentage 31.25% (n=35) from age group 21-30 years. Th e frequency of the type of hernia was fi rst diagnosed clinically and fi nally confi rmed during operation. 85 patients (75.89%) had indirect inguinal hernia and 27(24.10%) had direct inguinal hernia. Th ere was no major intra operative complication or postoperative death occurred. 36(32.14%) complications were observed. All were managed conservatively. Conclusion: Inguinal hernia is very common in males and Lichtenstein repair procedure can be performed safely, rapidly, tension free, in the surgical units with excellent outcome, with low postoperative complications and with very minimal chances of recurrence.
