Knowledge and need of emergency contraception among women at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Objective: To assess the knowledge and need for emergency contraception among women att ending antenatal clinic at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Study design: Hospital based cross sectional descriptive study Setting and duration: Obstetrics and Gynae unit III, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi from 1st January 2011 to 31st December 2011. Methodology: 2857 pregnant women coming to the department of obstetrics and gynaecology Abbasi Shaheed Hospital were included in our study. During the period of twelve months the questionnaire served to fi nd the status of knowledge and need for emergency contraception among these women. Confi dentiality was ensured. Conclusions: There is a lack of knowledge about emergency contraceptive methods especially current effective use of ECPs. The most common need for emergency contraception is unplanned pregnancies or TOP. Community health workers and doctors have provided them knowledge and motivated them for use of contraception during their antenatal, natal and postnatal period.
