Infectious complications in solid organ transplantation.
Infect Dis J Jan ;10(2):12-5.

Solid organ transplantation is becoming increasingly common therapy throughout the world for a variety of disease processes. The past two decades have seen major advances and improvements in surgical techniques, organ procurement, deployment of immunosuppressive drugs, and in diagnosis and treatment of infections. The chronic risk of infection, with its diagnostic challenges and potentially fatal outcome in transplant recipients represents the greatest clinical challenge, and the prevention and treatment of such infections is of central importance in the management of these patients. Most infections in transplant recipients represent either opportunistic infections resulting from immunosuppression or infections due to conventional nosocomial pathogens.
