Sero-Prevalence of Hepatitis B and C Viruses in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;5(2):78-80.

Background: A retrospective study to find out the seroprevalence of Hepatitis B and C among the patients of Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Method: The record was reviewed of 44 patients from allied hospitals of Rawalpindi Medical College and clinics of private consultants, with histologically confirmed HCC, who were tested for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). The tests for Hepatitis B were anti-HBsAg, anti-HBcAb and antiHBeAb. For Hepatitis-C it was antiHCV antibodies. This study was done to ascertain the evidence of infection due to the two viruses in these patients. Results: Twenty four (54%) of the patients expressed positivity for sero-markers of HCV, while 11 (25%) of the patients expressed positivity for the sero-markers of HBV infection. The sera of 3 patients (7%) showed sero-markers of both B & C virus. Six (14%,) patients of hepatocellular carcinoma showed no seromarkers for either HBV or HCV. Conclusions: The study indicates that in Northern Pakistan, infection with HCV is more common and has a major role to play in the causation of HCC compared to HBV infection.
