J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(3):169-71.

Objective: To Compare two most prevalent methods of hernial repair (Bassini and Darning) vis-a-vis early return to work and postoperative complications. Design: Double blind clinical trial was conducted and representative sample was taken from the male population with primary inguinal hernia presenting electively. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. Subjects and Methods: Fifty patients in each group were selected and randomly assigned to both type of Bassini and Darning repairs. Cases were followed-up for one year and postoperative complications were assessed. Results: There were significant difference between postoperative complications in two groups as scrotal hematoma, wound sepsis, testicular atrophy, urinary retention and orchitis were seen more in Bassini group. However, unlike many other studies, postoperative neuralgia was seen more in Darning group. Conclusion: Depending upon the surgeons skills and duration of surgery, Darning repair was superior to Bassini with regard to postoperative complications.
