Retinal Dialysis following Blunt Ocular Trauma by bullet case.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(3):172-5.

Objective: Twenty-four combat soldiers developed retinal dialysis following blunt ocular trauma by empty bullet case on the firing range. This study was aimed to analyse the effects of the extent of retinal dialysis and macular involvement on postoperative visual acuity. Design: An observational and analytical study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, Combined Military Hospital, Kharian and Military Hospital, Rawalpindi from January 1996 to December 2000. Subjects and Methods: A total of twenty-four patients, aged 21-39 years, with retinal dialysis were included in this study. A detailed history and thorough ophthalmic examination was conducted. These patients were hospitalized and treated with cryotherapy, circumferential scleral buckling surgery and drainage of subretinal fluid. Results: Anatomic success was achieved in all of the 24 cases. Postoperative visual acuity was better in those patients who had retinal dialysis without macular involvement. Conclusion: Improvement in postoperative visual acuity was not dependent upon the site and extent of retinal dialysis, rather it was related to macular involvement and associated pathologies due to trauma. We strongly recommend that single-piece polycarbonate eyeshield should be used as a protective eyewear on the firing range. Retinal dialysis following blunt ocular trauma by empty bullet case on the firing range has never been reported before in literature as no reference to it was found on MEDLINE search.
