Pattern of burn injuries at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar.

Objectives: To focus on the pattern of burn injuries at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar. Material and Methods: This study was carried out in the department of surgery, Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar, Pakistan from January 2002 to December 2008. Most of the patients were admitted through emergency department. The patients record was filled on prescribed proforma and evaluated for the pattern of burn injuries. Results: In this study 51.1% were male and 48.8% were female. 36.2% sufferers were of age group less than 10 years. In 44.0% of patients the cause was hot water and tea, followed by flame burns (40.37%). In 87% of cases the burns were domestic and 9.6% of cases occurred at work. Conclusion: An intensive awareness programme at home and work places is needed to prevent the burn injuries.
