Pak J Paed Surg Jan ;1-2:16-24.

A prospective study of 90 cases of inhaled tracheobronchial foreign bodies was undertaken over a period of three years. The age ranged from 7 months to 12 years, with a peak incidence between 3-6 years of age. There were 65 (72.2%) male and 25 (27.8%) female children. The commonest foreign body was plastic whistle, removed in 52 (57.7%) cases, followed by betel nuts in 15 (16.7%) and other vegetable seeds in 18 (20%) cases. Irritating cough and initial choking were the presenting features. Right main brochus was the commonest site of lodgement followed by left main bronchus, subglottis and laryngeal inlet. Rigid bronchoscopy under general anaesthesia was the preferred method for removal of aspirated material. The success was achieved in 97.8% cases with mortality rate of 2.2%.
