Rapid palatal expansion; Evaluation and analysis of the acrylic cap splint appliance.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to study the acrylic cap splint Rapid Palatal Expansion (RPE) appliance in regards to construction, advantages and disadvantages, amount of dental and skeletal movement, side effects and long-term retention related to the appliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 14 RPE cases, ranging from 14-28 years of age, with acrylic cap splint appliances were evaluated. RPE is an orthopedic procedure. While there is some tipping of teeth and bending of alveolar process, the main function of this device is to open the mid-palatal suture and move the bones of the maxilla apart maxilla apart and prevents molar extrusion. RESULTS: Both transverse and coronal expansion was achieved leading to correction of the buccal crossbites with significant improvement in nasal breathing. A total of 5 mm expansion in inter-canine area and 9 mm in inter-molar distance was achieved. Skeletal expansion was successfully achieved. There was anterior displacement of maxilla together with posterior and downward mandibular rotation and dental tipping of the buccal teeth. CONCLUSION: Acrylic cap splint RPE appliance is a safe and effective appliance for private and hospital practice.
