Disarticulation of hip a life saving procedure.

Objective:The study was conducted to evaluate the clinical out come of hip disarticulations done in a tertiary care public sector hospital. Study Design: Retrospective. Place and Duration of Study: Orthopaedic Unit 1, CHK, DUHS from December 2005 to June 2011 Patients and Method: It is a retrospective study conducted on twenty seven hip disarticulation patients from December 2005 to June 2011. All the patients who had disarticulation of hip for different reasons were reviewed for wound complications and post operative deaths. Results: Twenty seven hip disarticulations were done in a period of five years and six months. 15 patients had hip disarticulation for tumour, (9) infection and (3) trauma.Wound complications and death rate was more in infection and trauma patients and in those patients who were operated on emergency basis. Conclusion: Disarticulation of the hip is a useful procedure when carried out for saving life where other options run out.
