Usefulness of ponseiti technique in management of congenital talipes equino-varus.

Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of Ponseiti technique for management of congenital talipes equinovarus in childrens. Place and Duration of Study: study was performed from May, 2006 April 2011, in Orthopedic Unit of Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar, Pakistan. Study Design: Descriptive Study Patients and Methods: This prospective hospital based observational study was performed from May, 2006 to April 2011, in Orthopedic Unit of Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar, Pakistan. Thirty consecutive patients of either sex with age less than 6 months having congenital talipes equinovaru were evaluated by Pirani score and treated by Ponseiti technique and were followed up for 2 year. Results: Out of thirty patients, 16(%) were males and 14(%) females. Twelve (30%) patients had bilateral while 28 (70%) unilateral deformity. Using Pirani score there were 18(60%) patient severely abnormal, 12(40%) were moderately abnormal at first cast. At final follow up 28(93.3%) were normal while 2(6.6%) moderately abnormal. Achilles tenotomy was done in 20(66.6%) patients. Conclusion: Ponseti method is a safe and satisfactory treatment for congenital idiopathic clubfoot with good results.
