Evaluation of results of external fixation in the treatment of comminuted distal radius fractures.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate the results of closed external fixation in the treatment of comminuted distal radius fractures. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective case series study PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: District Headquarter teaching Hospital Sargodha from January 2008 to January 2009 PATIENTS & METHODS: This study was based on 24 consective cases of comminuted fractures of distal radius over a period of one year. All patients were received through accident and emergency department of DHQ Teaching Hospital Sargodha. There were 14 females (58.3%) and 10 males (41.7%) with mean age of 50 years (range 40 to 60 years). Union was achieve in 7.3 weeks. RESULTS: 12 (50%) patients had excellent Gartland and werley’s wrist score. 10 patients (41.6%) had good Gartland and Werley’s wrist score. One patient (4.6%) had fair and one patient (4.6%) had poor wrist score. CONCLUSION: Primary application of external fixator across the wrist joint for communicated fractures of distal radius is an effective method (91.6%) in our study. Rehabilitation can be started early and there is quick functional recovery.
