J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(4):219-22.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in outpatients. Design: A prospective study. Place: A private clinic, AI-Hafeez Medical Center, Karachi (Pakistan). Subjects and Methods: One hundred patients presenting with the complaints of infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, bad obstetric history, previous or current ectopic pregnancy. Patients who presented with vaginal discharge, clinically diagnosed pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, bad obstetric history and history of ectopic pregnancy were selected. The patients who had some definite diagnosis, etiology or predisposing factors for their complaints were excluded. The patients thus selected were subjected to the test. An endocervical swab was taken from each patient and was examined by ELISA technique. Results: Out of 100 endocervical samples taken, test was positive in 7 patients (7%), 3 (42.8 %) of these patients presented with vaginal discharge, 2 (28.8%) presented with pelvic inflammatory disease, 1(14.2%) presented with infertility and 1 (14.2%) patient presented with recurrent abortion. Conclusion: Local prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis is comparable to the prevalence in western world. While treating patients with mucopurulent vaginal discharge and pelvic inflammatory diseases, choice should be made of the drugs effective against Chlamydia trachomatis infection.
