Prevalence of Carcinoma in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

This prospective study was conducted on 100 patients to evaluate prevalence of carcinoma prostate in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia admitted to the Department of urology, Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur from January 1999 to December 2000. Digital rectal examination (DRE), transabdominal ultrasonography and ure thra-cystoscopy were done in all patients. Transrectal trucut biopsy was done in nine patients in whom malignancy was clinically suspected. Histopathological analysis of prostatic tissue was obtained after transurethral or transvesical prostatectomy. Prevalence of carcinoma prostate recorded in this study was 19%, concluding that all specimens must be submitted for histological analysis after prostatectomy.
