Outcome of cut throat injury due to kite string.

Objective: Th e purpose of study was to evaluate and document the outcome of kite string cut throat cases brought at trauma center of tertiary care hospital. Design: Prospective study. Sett ing and duration: Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Karachi Medical and Dental College during the period of 1 September 2012 to 10 September 2013. Methodology: 19 patients were selected in this study that came with kite string (manja) cut throat in emergency room of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Karachi Medical and Dental College. Results: 7 cases (36.84%) presented with skin and soft tissue involvement while larynx and hypopharynx involved in 6 cases (31.57%). Two victims (10.52%) died during resuscitation due to severe bleeding and compromised airway while 2 cases (10.52%) came brought dead in emergency room. 15 (78.94%) patients were discharged aft er repair and treatment. 8 patients (53.33%) required tracheostomy with repair of the injury. 2 patients had permanent tracheostomy while 1 developed wound infection. Conclusion: Proper assessment, early and accurate treatment may prevent un-necessary outcome in cases of cut throat injury due to kite string.
