Fibroadenoma excision through periareolar incision versus an overlying incision.
Pak J Surg Jan ;29(3):165-8.

Background: Breast fi broadenomas are traditionally excised through an incision overlying the tumour. Excision through a periareolar incision is a recent and important development in terms of cosmesis. Aims: Th e purpose of the study was to evaluate the periareolar technique of fi broadenoma excision. Methods: Clinical data from thirty-six (36) patients undergoing fi broadenoma excision through periareolar incisions (Group A) and forty (40) patients undergoing the overlying incision technique was retrospectively analyzed in study using the non-randomized technique, assessing parameters like operative time, postoperative complications, and overall cosmetic outcome. Th e periareolar incision technique was described in terms of indications and operative procedure. Results: Employing the periareolar technique meant more immediate postoperative complications (3 out of 36, vs 1 out of 40, p=0.067). Follow-up at six months showed that patients who underwent the periareolar technique had bett er cosmetic outcome (94.6% vs 73.5%, p=0.001). Conclusion: Th e periareolar incision tends to give bett er cosmetic outcome at the cost of minor postoperative complications comparable to the overlying incision technique.
