Breast cancer in Pakistan - a situation analysis.

Objectives: To analyse current patt ern of breast cancer in Pakistani women and their outcome. Study Design: Observational Cohort study. Sett ing and Duration: Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Nuclear Institute of Medicine and Radiotherapy (NIMRA ), Jamshoro, Pakistan, from January 2006 to December 2012. Methodology: Over a period of 6 years (2006-2012) 304 women presented with non-metastatic breast cancer and had complete clinical information available from date of diagnosis till death or last follow-up. Th e overall patt ern of the disease and the outcome were analysed. Results: Median age at diagnosis was 45 years with 4cm median clinical size of tumours Th ere was a slight predominance of right sided cancer. Majority hadinfi ltrating carcinoma followed by lobular type. Grade II & III were frequently seen and oestrogen and progesterone receptor were positive in 70% and 60% respectively. Aft er a median follow-up of 10months local recurrence and metastases were observed in 3.9% and 17.7% patients respectively. Conclusion: Th e results of the series suggested that women in this part of the world tend to develop breast cancer at younger age and with larger clinical sizes and relatively aggressive behaviour. Further studies are required to set guidelines for the age of screening and management protocols.
